What to Expect with Dental Implant Treatment

Dental implants in Long Beach are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. Patients with dental implants can smile with confidence. The dental implants themselves are small titanium screws, which are inserted into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Small anchors are then attached to the dental implant, which provides stable connection points for your replacement teeth. Dental implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

Our Three Phase Process

Your consultation will be the time to come in and experience our office environment. We will collect data and diagnostics at this visit as well as a financial commitment from you. During your consultation, we will discuss any pain points or preliminary treatments you may require. We will develop a tentative timeline for your treatment and begin to schedule the following phases. Feel free to ask us about success stories, case studies, and anything else that will make the situation easier for you to understand. We look forward to alleviating your doubts and restoring your smile and lifestyle.

First, you’ll come to our office, and we will make you comfortable in one of our surgical suites. Procedures generally last only a few hours when implants are placed throughout your jawbone. The surgery will be precise and well-planned before your appointment. We will use sedation dentistry techniques to make this procedure mild in any pain and memory. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, your dentist is fabricating your new forever teeth. After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, Dr. Silegy will uncover the implants and attach anchors for the bridge of teeth to attach to. Alternatively, Dr. Silegy can place single-stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them but do require a minimum of six weeks recovery before prosthetics are placed. If you qualify, some implants can be placed at the same time as a tooth extraction – further minimizing the number of surgical procedures. Advances in dental implant technology have made it possible, in select cases, to extract teeth and place implants with crowns at one visit to greatly simplify the surgical process.

After your mouth has fully healed (3-6) months, you will receive your permanent restoration. Oftentimes, temporaries will be worn. The final prosthetics will be adjusted to fit your smile perfectly. This permanent set will be milled from the most durable materials in dentistry and then color-matched to ensure your new teeth mimic natural ones.

Maintaining Dental Implants

Even though dental implants don’t get cavities, you still need to keep them clean. You will maintain your implants the way one would with natural teeth which includes brushing, flossing, and biannual dental visits. When dental implants go uncared for you could develop Peri-implantitis which is the dental implant form of gum disease. It’s why thoroughly cleaning dental implants each day is so important. Without the right prevention, peri-implantitis can lead to dental implant failure. Yes, implants are designed to last for life. But they can also develop complications if they’re not cared for properly. By scheduling a professional checkup and cleaning at least every six months you can be certain to get the most out of your new smile.
