Wisdom Teeth Extractions

When your teenager starts mentioning a dull ache in the back of their mouth, it might be the first sign of a common dental milestone: the arrival of wisdom teeth. It might seem like a small concern, but wisdom teeth can quietly create significant issues if they don’t grow properly. Often, they get trapped beneath the gums, pushing against healthy teeth or growing at awkward angles that disrupt an otherwise aligned smile. Even when wisdom teeth fully erupt, they’re notoriously difficult to clean, becoming a breeding ground for decay and infection.

At Silegy OMFS, we understand how frustrating and concerning this can be for you or your teen. With over 25 years of experience, our team is dedicated to protecting your family’s smiles by gently and effectively removing impacted wisdom teeth in Long Beach, CA. Our thoughtful approach prioritizes comfort, prevention, and long-term dental health. Our team is dedicated to assessing the ideal timing for wisdom tooth removal, ensuring a healthy, comfortable smile for you or your teen. With Silegy OMFS, you can feel confident that the procedure will be handled with expertise and care, with appointments scheduled at the earliest convenience to fit your needs.

Anesthesia Options During Wisdom Teeth Removal

At Silegy OMFS, your comfort is our priority. We’ll take the time to walk you through the anesthesia options available, ensuring you feel confident and at ease before your procedure. We offer these options to help ensure your entire experience is completely comfortable and pain-free.

One of the main advantages of seeing our oral surgeon for wisdom teeth extractions is the ability to “sleep” throughout the entire procedure. Oral surgeons are board-certified in anesthesia techniques. We are fully qualified to use general or sedation anesthesia, allowing you to be unaware of the procedure and completely relaxed and comfortable.

Choosing the right anesthesia is key to ensuring your comfort and a positive experience. We’ll guide you through the available options, from local to general anesthesia and everything in between. By addressing your concerns and tailoring the approach to your needs, we’ll help create a personalized and stress-free experience.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to share this information with your provider. Your provider from Silegy OMFS will be able to give you helpful information and calm any worries.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction Steps

The wisdom teeth extraction process occurs over the course of a couple of appointments. While every treatment plan is unique, they typically follow the steps below:

Phase 1: Exam & Planning

We recommend scheduling a consultation as soon as Dr. Silegy identifies wisdom teeth formation, ensuring they’re addressed at the ideal stage for removal with minimal discomfort. Generally, wisdom teeth are most straightforward to extract once they have formed but have not yet erupted through the gums or impacted other healthy teeth.

During your consultation, we’ll perform a comprehensive oral exam using advanced 3D digital CT scanning technology. This cutting-edge approach allows us to plan your procedure with precision, reducing risks and post-operative discomfort.

We encourage you to prepare in a few ways before coming in for your consultation with us. You should expect to discuss your medical history, including past surgeries, allergies, conditions, medications, and other lifestyle factors. You should also talk to your provider about any concerns you may have so you can get answers to your questions.

We will discuss anesthetic options and what to expect on the day of your surgery and the days following. Following the clinical planning phase, we will review the procedure timeline, the time commitment for healing, and various payment options to ensure the treatment fits comfortably within your budget.

Phase 2: On the Day of Your Extraction Appointment

You will be directed to fast for 12 hours before your procedure. During this time, you should not eat or drink anything, including water.

On the day of your procedure, we encourage you to bring a trusted friend or family member to help you get home safely and ensure you’re well cared for during your recovery. For your comfort, we will administer the anesthetic of choice. The anesthetic administered will be carefully chosen during our consultation to ensure it is the most appropriate option, providing the highest level of comfort throughout your procedure.

For most patients, choosing to sleep through the procedure provides a calm and pain-free experience. From start to finish, including preparation and recovery, the process typically takes about 60-90 minutes. You should also plan to rest in the day or so following the procedure.

Phase 3: One Week Following Your Extraction Appointment

You will return to the office one week after your extraction appointment so we can check in on how you are healing. We will also take this time to remove any stitches. After this appointment, you can return to normal activities.
